| We need to change the held ball rule to eliminate the change of possession arrow. There are far too many jump balls to begin with. It is my understanding that one rationale for instituting the alternating possession arrow was the concern that the game officials be able to administer a “fair toss” between the players who were “jumpin’ it
up.”
We can solve this problem easily: all held balls should be awarded to the defensive team.
Otherwise, the offense, whose play usually leads to the held ball, gets 50% of the calls! I’d like to see the defense, whose play forces most of the held balls, be rewarded for aggressive play and not penalized because the arrow points the other way!
There would be no more confusion as to which team has the arrow and it would take pressure off the scoring table to get the arrow right (which is not always that simple!)
